A Message from the Chairman
Remember if you go to a tournament,
or shoot at another club on their target day,
to please give a copy of the results sheet to our club's records officer.
Your personal scoresheet countersigned by a witness will do as well.
It's the Records Officers job to log all your scores so that your handicap rating and classification can be determined.
Some shoots require your current status before you can be eligible for a medal.
Sally Sandoe, who is our Records Officer, does go to most tournaments in the DCAS area,
but it is up to you to make sure that she gets your scores.
Celtic Archery
Most of you will have read the notice by now,
and know that dave and Sue Horder have moved up to Shropshire to take over from
Leslie Wason who is retiring from Bow Plus.
So alas our 'local corner shop' for archery supplies is no more at Four Lanes.
Their son Chris will continue to live in the village and will specialise in making strings for compound bows.
But dry your tears.
Jimmy and Sally Sandoe under the name 'Archery Link' will be continuing to supply your needs to the best of their ability,
so please consult them for your requirements.
They live only a short distance from the field, so are even more conveniently sited.
We wish Dave and Sue every success 'up the line'.
Postal Warwicks
Due to an apparent lack of support in the county it looked as if the summer postal Warwicks couldn't be run this year.
But thanks to our own Kevin Chidgey, plus some last minute support from other clubs it is going ahead again.
Kevin has voulunteered to run these for our club so please give him all your support by shooting Warwick rounds each month.
Only four dozen arrows make up this round so it can easily be shot in an evening.
Just to remind you:
- Longbows shoot a Short Warwick - 2 dozen at 50 yards, 2 dozen at 40 yards.
- Recurves and compounds shoot the Long Warwick - 2 dozen at 80 yards, 2 dozen at 60 yards.
And don't forget, all scoring is Imperial i.e. no even numbers please.
Although rounds shot outside of a target day can't be counted as 'official',
you may shoot your postal scores at other times, providing more than one of you are shooting.
Any Questions? - Ask Kevin.
Get Ready for the FITA Star
Yes it's getting near that time again when we all pull together to satge our annual pot-hunter's ball,
the prestigious FITA Star Tournament on Sunday the 28th July.
Don't forget that this is World Record Status and as such has to be run to the very highest of standards.
That means we all have to chip in and exhibit our various talents - yes you!
Whether it be adding up scores, selling raffle tickets, serving refreshments, moving targets,
filling rabbit holes, posting direction signs, marshalling cars, painting lines, cutting grass, raking same,
donating refreshments, donating raffle prizes, erecting gazebos, etc, etc -
the list is endless and it all needs to be done. As usual with such events members of the host club (that's us)
do not shoot at their own tournaments, but also, as usual, because we are a large and capable club
we usually manage to accomodate most members who do wish to shoot as well as help.
But remember - helping to run and shoot in the same tournament can be very exhausting,
so make sure you have the stamina for it.
This year we are honoured to have Gwen Skipper as our Lady Paramount.
Gwen was with redruth Archers from the very early days until her job forced her to move,
and even before that she was a Master Bowman for many years, and served on the GNAS National Council.
The Whole event is OUR contribution to the sport.
Most clubs host at least one major tournament for the benefit of other clubs.
If they didn't, there would be no archery.
This is one of ours. Please give it your maximum support.
Times of Shooting at the Club
Target days are when your scores count. These are:
- Thursdays
- Saturdays
- Sundays
- Bank Holidays.
- Or if shooting as a visitor at another club, that club's target day.
Recognised times of shooting are:
- 10:30am for 11:00am start
- 1:30pm for 2:00pm start
- 6:30pm for 7:00pm start
Wednesday evenings are set aside for beginners and those going through the improvers' scheme.
All other times are normally available for you to practice,
although there are occasions when parts of the field will be undergoing maintenance,
or special fund-raising may be going on.
Dunster 2002 Report
Well, once again Dunster Week has come and gone.
This yearwith excellent weather, no rain until late on the Friday, and then only a little bit.
-
Monday - The GNAS FITA
As usual.
-
Tuesday - The Field Course, with an Albion for those stick-in-the-muds who only do targets.
Now here was something special! A new field course located in the Coombe Sydenham Country Park.
Splendid setting right next to the old house once lived in by Elizabeth Sydenham,
one of the wealthiest heiresses in england and who was Sir Francis Drake's second wife.
A small personal triumph for me (Tony Collins), as I won the gold medal for the Gents Freestyle recurve.
-
Wednesday - Longbow Day.
This must be the biggest longbow tournament in the world with over 200 entries.
A funny moment occured at assembly when the Field Captain was trying to present the 'Archer of the Year'
trophy to Russel French. He, unaware of this,
had left his bracer in the car and was making off to get it just as the announcement was reaching its climax.
It looked as though he was overcome by modesty and running away.
Anyone who knows him can see how preposterous that would have been!
Mr French then went on to break his own Dunster record of 611 by scoring 674!
With no misses he was outright winner. And he complained at not getting a three-gold end all day!
Also Shooting with me was Barbara Webber, one-time Veteran Sportswoman of the Year.
She won a special gold prize,
although having had a minor stroke she promised her husband only to shoot four dozen arrows.
Barbara is 88 years old, so if you think you're getting past it - think again!
-
Thursday - Double Two-way Clout.
A Strangely erratic breeze meant that scores were a bit down on previous years,
Which is another way of saying that yours truely only came sixth.
-
Friday - The Western Round.
(My day off) bit Sally and Jimmy Sandoe won the Hart and Hind Married Couples Trophy here.
-
Saturday/Sunday - The GWAS Championships.
Tricky breeze again, worse on the Sunday but otherwise warm and sunny.
Prizegiving for the whole week takes place on Sunday after shooting,
with our very own Sally in place of honour,
representing our County.
All prizewinners shake hands with lady Lutrell.
You will be happy to know that on the Sunday our own paul Callaway came up to the Dunster site with
Bob Weedon's truck and collected eight second-hand bosses for our club.
These bosses are offered for sale by GWAS from time to time,
and although partly worn are nevertheless in pretty good condition,
having only been used for one week per year and are CHEAP.
Thanks Paul and Bob.
I lost two longbow arrows on Wednesday,
and scratching in the long grass failed to find them.
Had another scratch between final shoot and prizegiving,
still no go (oh, I can be tenacious when I want to be).
Went back and scratched again on Monday afternoon when the field had been cleared. Found one - Hooray!
Slightly bent, tried to straighten it. Snap. B****r! Gave up on the other.

Late News
Our sympathies go out to Andrew Callaway who was selected to shoot for
Great Britain team at the Europa Cup in Italy amd the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic.
Whilst delivering our bosses from Dunster he sustained a severe injury to his hand and will not be able to shoot for a while.
Rotten luck Andrew
And Finally
Good shooting (Sethyeugh Inta), and may all your worst arrows be line-touchers. Tony Collins.
